CLIENT BRIEF

When the Mono Indian Tribe of the Pacific Northwest approached us to create a new energy drink brand for their retail and casino locations, they envisioned something that could compete with major players like Red Bull and Monster while feeling deeply authentic to their heritage. The challenge was to design a brand that celebrated Native American culture without representing any single tribe too narrowly. With over a dozen tribes on their reservation, each with its own traditions, colors, and values, we needed to create a unifying visual identity that honored their collective spirit. The result would need to feel powerful, modern, and energetic while still rooted in the artistry, symbolism, and storytelling that define Indigenous culture. And most importantly, a brand that could proudly stand for all of them.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

After extensive conversations with tribe leaders, we grounded the brand in their native language, cultural symbols, and artistic expression. The typography on TZOW Energy cans blends tradition and clarity through a thoughtful mix of serif and sans-serif fonts. The bold, custom serif, mirroring the “T” in the logo, is used for high-impact elements like the brand name, slogans, and flavor titles, evoking heritage and strength while honoring the visual rhythm of tribal lettering and storytelling. A complementary futuristic sans-serif font was introduced for the sugar-free line, giving those SKUs a cleaner, high-energy edge that communicates modern performance. Supporting details such as ingredients, descriptors, and nutritional information use a minimal sans-serif typeface for readability and balance, creating a clean hierarchy that feels both functional and expressive.

Through research, we discovered that sacred birds, dance, and mountains were universal symbols across the tribes, forming the foundation of our visual system. Each flavor was assigned a bird revered in Native storytelling, named in the Mono language, and paired with a backdrop featuring the mountain range surrounding the reservation. Traditional basket-weaving patterns frame the top and bottom of each can, connecting the brand’s modern energy to its ancestral roots. Finally, to reflect the cultural importance of rhythm and chant, we developed three slogans tying movement to meaning: “TZOW MAKES YOU DANCE,” “IGNITE THE FIRE WITHIN,” and “ROOTED IN TRADITION, MADE FOR MOTION.”

TZOW Energy was created with a powerful mission: to energize and empower Native communities, beginning with the Mono people of the Big Sandy Rancheria reservation in California. As a new brand, its primary goal is to create a product that not only fuels the body, but uplifts tribal identity and pride, starting with the Mono community by honoring their language through unique flavor names and cultural references.

NAMING RITUAL - TZOW ENERGY

The name TZOW was chosen for its roots in the Mono Indian language, where it roughly means “good” — a simple but powerful word that reflects the brand’s intention to uplift and energize in a positive way. Beyond its meaning, the name stood out for being short, bold, and easy to say, with a distinctive look and sound. The strong “TZ” combination gives it a striking visual identity that feels modern and memorable, perfectly suited for a brand born from tradition but built for now.

  • FLAVOR #1 | PUT-NAH
The name Put-Nah was chosen for the red flavor because it means “red-tailed hawk” in the Mono language. A fierce and sacred bird that symbolizes focus, freedom, and strength.
  • FLAVOR #2 | TZA-GUAN
The name Tza-Guan was chosen for the blue flavor as it translates to “blue jay” in the Mono language. A vibrant, intelligent bird known for its bold voice and lively spirit.
  • FLAVOR #3 | QUINTNAH
The name Quintnah was chosen for the pink flavor, meaning “bald eagle” in the Mono language. A powerful symbol of vision, leadership, and sacred strength across many Native tribes.
  • FLAVOR #4 | KWEE’-NAH
The name Kwee’-Nah was chosen for the lemonade flavor, meaning “golden eagle” in the Mono language. An honored bird that represents spiritual power, protection, and connection to the Creator.
